Welcome to my website! My name is Dr. Mikel Norris and I am an associate professor of politics at Coastal Carolina University. My teaching and research interests center on American courts and the law. I teach a variety of law-related courses, and also teach survey courses in American Government, and empirical methods for political science majors. I am an adviser for the pre-law minor at Coastal Carolina University, and am also the coach of our moot court team.
My primary research looks at institutional and behavioral factors that shape American courts. My main research interest is in state and federal judicial selection. However, I am also interested in court leadership and the role of gender in judicial selection, leadership, and decision making. I am also interested in researching the effects of income inequality on the American political system, and the causes and consequences of declining external political efficacy in the American electorate.
I received my B.A. in political science from Ohio University in 2000, my M.A. from Marshall University in 2007, and my PhD from the University of Tennessee in 2012. I worked for OneGroup Mutual Funds and JP Morgan Asset Management from 2000 to 2005. In 2002 I was able to freak out a bit and tour and play bass with my college rock band out West. You can hear some of our better song performances here, here, here, here, and here. If you have any questions about my teaching or research, please contact me via the information listed above. In the meantime, please enjoy the site!
